The carbine has the distinctive guide screw in the right side of the receiver. The barrel is fitted with a folding two-leaf rear sight with three apertures graduated "1", "3" and "5". A sling bar (without ring) is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The top of the receiver is marked "BURNSIDE PATENT/MARCH 25th 1856", "BURNSIDE RIFLE CO./PROVIDENCE =R.I." is stamped on the lock plate, "CAST STEEL" stamped on barrel and matching serial number stamped on the top of the receiver and breechblock. The rear of the barrel is marked "P" and single letter sub-inspector marks are stamped on some components. The stock has two boxed cartouches on the wrist.

Condition: About good. The carbine has a mottled gray patina with the receiver and hammer retaining mostly the pattern of silvered out case colors. The wood is good with a large surface chip missing from the forearm, initials hand marked on the buttstock and some pressure dents and scratches. The cartouches are weak but legible. Mechanically fine.
