This is an outstanding finely carved steer horn wonderfully engraved scrimshaw powder horn dated 1850 and signed JTD. This powder horn / powder flask is identified JTD and highly engraved with animals, U.S. American Eagle, and mythical creatures. The end has a finely crafted beveled design with raised ridge carved. The end is capped with a wood with an iron loop. The surface shows fine engravings with JTD being deeply cut in old English pattern letters an 1850 below. The piece shows a fish, standing bird with snake in its mouth, cat or dog, horse-like figure with cat-like face and “APE or ARE” underneath, “JTD” engraved in script with 1850 below, a horse-like figure with scales on its body, raised lizard like tail and single horn coming out of its head (likely a dragon), Bald Eagle holding arrows and a bow in its talons, a bird likely a goose, shrubbery and a tree. One of the more uncommon and unusual early American powder horns. Measures overall 16 inches long from tip to end by approximately 4”D (when laid flat).
