Item/Description: Grouping of three hand-carved Chinese soapstone decorative sculptural objects. Late Qing Dynasty to Republic Period, late 19th to early 20th century. Features three distinct figural forms including a double vase, plaque, and double brush pot or inkwells. Double vase is accented with high-relief Chrysanthemums florals and foliage, representing longevity and resilience due to their ability to bloom in the cold of autumn. The central plaque features deep undercutting with a phoenix amidst blooming peonies presented on an integrated, contrasting lighter-colored stone base. The combination of the phoenix and peonies is a highly auspicious motif representing the "kings" of the natural world with their union symbolizing good fortune, peace, and a flourishing life. The brush pot features a monkey and birds on tree limbs, creating a visual pun or rebus, using the homophone for the word monkey and marquis (a high-ranking official), symbolizing a wish for rapid promotion and career advancement. (Scholarly Desk Accessories, Archaic Revival)
