This lot offers up a set of two intricate Chinese changhua heliotrope carvings. The changhua heliotrope is a soft precious stone found only in China. The changhua heliotrope is a natural precious stone formed by the paragenesis of cinnabar, kaolinite, dickite, and pyrophyllite. Jade specialists believe that Changhua heliotrope is the one richest in color and most changeful among more than 200 kinds of gems. They come in white, yellow, black, grey, red, brown, cyan, and green. In terms of transparency, they can be classified as transparent, translucent, subtranslucent, or opaque. Generally, Changhua heliotrope consists of more than 50 colorful and remarkable varieties that fall into 4 categories of frozen ground, soft ground, hard ground, and rigid ground. These particular carvings show a rich red/brown, black, and milky white color, while the other vase carving shows a mixture of jade, white, and tan. The carvings show fantastic floral detail, and expert craftsmanship. The vase carvings are in good condition. The larger jade colored vase measures approximately 10 5/8" tall, 4 1/2" deep, and 10 3/4" wide.
