Chieftain’s quality North African miquelet flintlock pistol of massive size with ornate silver mountings and inlay accented with engraved gold inlays and signed in Arabic on top of barrel. The pistol measures 26” overall with a 19” octagon barrel of approximately .52 caliber smoothbore. The barrel shows a makers mark along with good quality silver overlay that is hand engraved and covers the majority of the barrel in 3 sections. There is a date on the tang which is also sheathed in silver and the stock is silver wire inlaid in a scroll motif with small hammered gold accents engraved to match. The mounts are a silver alloy and show a touch mark on the strap of the butt cap. The lock is also sheathed in silver and engraved with a small gold inlay at the center with writing upon it. The condition is good to very good with some normal rust and slight pitting on the octagon barrel and exposed steel areas of lock. The stock is in good to very good condition with perhaps 5% of the silver wire unraveling or missing and about 95% intact. From a major Eastern arms collection. The writing should be translated as it may identify the owner or region the pistol originated from. In our opinion it was made somewhere near Morocco in the mid-to late 19th century.
