Cattle Brand Engraved Colt Single Action Army Revolver by Cole Agee
This Colt Single Action Army revolver was manufactured in 1903. The revolver was subsequently engraved by Cole Agee in the 1950s with his distinctive cattle brand engraving. All of the exterior surfaces of the revolver with the exception of the hammer and cylinder flutes are engraved with Western cattle brands on a stippled background. At least thirty-four separate brands are visible on the revolver. The backstrap has the name "D. Hix" incorporated into the style of engraving (history unknown). The revolver has a silver-plated finish and is fitted with two-piece ivory stocks. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co./ HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in two lines in an oval panel. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped with the caliber: "38 W.C.F" in a panel with oval borders. The left side of the frame is stamped with the Colt, 'three-date in two-line' patent marking followed by the encircled Rampant Colt trademark. The full serial number, "242980" is located on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and backstrap. All of the visible serial numbers match. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the partial serial number "4921".

Gauge: 38-40 WCF
Finish: silver-plated
Grips: ivory

Condition: Very fine as custome embellished. The silver-plated finish is heavily tarnished and the revolver has a silver-gray patina with bright highlights. The plating is bright in protected areas. The engraving is deep and crisp. The barrel and frame markings are clear. The bore is in very good condition. There is light pitting on the cylinder face. The action is tight but the hammer will not hold at half-cock. The ivory grips are in fair-good condition with moderate age discoloration, shrinkage, scattered crack and two minor chips. Cole Agee is recognized and respected for his unique and distinctively western engraving, and if ever a SAA revolver were one of his works, here it is! This is a very attractive, fully engraved Colt Single Action Army revolver.
