Although so mentioned in later Maynard catalogs as the "Model 1865", these rifles were produced in 1863 to 1865 simultaneous with the wartime carbines. This cased set consists of two 26 inch part octagon barrels, one 32 caliber with fixed sights and a 20 gauge shotgun barrel with a small brass blade front sight. Both include the lever and neither are numbered. The left side of the frame is marked "EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE / MAY 27, 1851 / DEC 59" and the right side is marked with the three line Massachusetts Arms address. The upper tang is fitted with a mid range peep sight and stop stud. Blue barrels and casehardened remaining parts, and mounted with a smooth varnished walnut stock with a carbine buttplate. Complete in a custom wooden case with green fitted felt lining. Included in the case is a iron two cavity Mass. Arms bullet mold, a wooden cleaning rod, powder measurer, partially full UMC percussion cap tin, wads, cleaning patches and lead bullets.

Condition: Fine. The barrels retain 90% original blue finish with some areas fading to a smooth plum patina and showing some muzzle wear and minor pitting on the shotgun barrel. There is a small area on the rifle barrel that is worn due to the sprue on the bullet mold rubbing against it in the case. The action has faded to a smooth mottled silver gray patina and the lower tang shows traces of original case colors mixed with smooth mottled gray patina. The stock is also very fine with 98% original varnish remaining and showing a few minor dents and dings. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine. The case is good with scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The lining shows some contact wear and soiling. All accessories are good, the bullet mold has been cleaned bright.
