Cased Robbins & Lawrence Pepperbox Pistol
Approximately 7,000 of these Pepperboxes were manufactured from 1851 to 1854 and were an improved version of the George Leonard Jr. patent. Marked "ROBBINS & LAWRENCE CO", "WINDSOR.VT" and "PATENT. 1849." on three adjacent barrel ribs. The serial number is marked on the butt, left side of the frame under the grip and on the inside of each grip panel, with the partial number "54" marked on the face of the breech. This pistol is fitted with the 3 1/4" five shot barrel cluster that unscrews to load and the breech section tips down for capping. Standard broad scroll engraving on the breech end of the barrels, frame and fitted with smooth two piece walnut grips. Complete in a walnut case with blue lining, a brass charger, oiler, two cavity bullet mold, about 15 caps and a wooden handled cleaning rod.
BBL: 3 1/4 inch ribbed
Stock:
Gauge: 31 percussion
Finish: blue/brown
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 5854
Condition: Good. The metal surfaces have been cleaned many years ago and the pistol has a silver gray patina overall with some scattered minor pitting on the barrels. The grips are very good with a few minor pressure dents, some minor wear on the lower edges and a minor nicks. The barrels are a bit out of line with the breech section when tightened, otherwise the mechanics are fine. The markings and engraving remain clear and crisp. The case is good with a crack and chip on the lid (which is slightly off center) and some contact wear and soiling of the otherwise fine original lining. The accessories are all good or better.
