Cased Colt Factory Engraved, Model 1849 Pocket Revolver with Ivory Grips

Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver manufactured in 1856. The revolver has a six-inch barrel with five-shot cylinder. The barrel and cylinder have a blue finish, the loading lever, frame and hammer are color case-hardened and the brass trigger guard and back strap are silver-plated. The revolver is fitted with a one-piece ivory grip. An apostrophe, used by Colt to denote revolvers that were intended to be engraved and fitted with ivory grips, is stamped below the serial number on the frame and trigger guard. The revolver is factory engraved by master engraver Gustave Young or his shop. The barrel lug, loading lever, wedge, frame, trigger guard and back strap feature Young's Germanic scrollwork on a punch-dot background. The hammer is engraved with the wolf's head motif found on Gustave Young engraved percussion revolvers. The top of the barrel is hand-engraved with "Saml Colt" in Old English letters surrounded by engraved flourishes, The cylinder is roll-engraved with the stagecoach holdup scene and "COLTS PATENT". "COLTS/PATENT" is engraved in an arch on the left side of the frame. The full serial number, "129194" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "9194" is stamped on the loading lever. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver is complete with a Colt mahogany case lined with red velvet. The case has five compartments and contains: (1) several .31 caliber lead balls, (2) brass, double cavity bullet mold stamped "COLTS/PATENT" across the top, (3) blued, L-shaped, combination screw-driver and nipple wrench, (4) 100 cap tin of Goldmark's percussion caps with green label, (5) sealed packet of five Colt's combustible cartridges for revolving pocket pistols and (6) copper, fixed charger, powder flask embossed on one side with "COLTS/PATENT" above stars, an eagle and shield, crossed revolvers and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in a ribbon.

Good as refinished. The revolver has an attractive artificial silver-gray patina on the barrel, loading lever, cylinder, fame and hammer. Small amounts of the original blue and case-hardened finish are present in protected areas. The trigger guard and back strap retain about 60% of the blue and case-hardened finish. The sides of the hammer show light-moderate flash pitting. The detailed Germanic scroll engraving remains sharp. The markings and serial numbers are crisp. The cylinder retains most of the stage hold-up scene. All of the cylinder safety pins are intact. The ivory grip is slightly yellowed and has several hair-line age cracks on the left side and both heels. There is a tiny chip missing from the lower front edge of the right grip. The action is crisp but the cylinder does not turn freely at half-cock. The case exterior is in very good condition with some minor dents and handling marks. The interior is in fair to good condition. The lining is faded and stained; several of the partitions show partial breaks. The accessories show moderate-heavy wear and are in good overall condition. This is a good example of a factory cased, Gustave Young engraved, Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver with factory ivory grips.
