Ca. 1950 Navajo Thunder God Sand Painting Rug RARE
This is an incredibly rare, Navajo tapestry weaving showing a Thunder God Sandpainting design dating to the circa 1950’s. This is a fine tightly woven tapestry weaving with handspun dyed wool showing four Thunder or Lightning God Yei / Yei-be-chai figures with a Rainbow Guardian Yei / Yei-be-chai Border. There also the four sacred plants including corn, beans, tobacco, and squash all with white roots growing towards the center yellow and blue center circle, likely representing the earth. The rug is done in a Sandpainting / Sand Painting pattern, such as the works of art done in sand with similar Yei figures by Navajo artists and as such the rug has a light tan sand color background. The rug is in very good to excellent condition with small signs of its old age but very well kept. Truly a very rare and uncommon Yei rug with early age and very fine weave. The rug shows nice lazy lines in the weave. Measures without tassel corners 45 inches by 45 inches.
