Ca. 1880 Montana Territory Stock Saddle
The lot features a circa 1880 Montana Territory Stock Saddle with Samstag rigging and half seat. The saddle has a high back, open half seat and square skirt with nice leather work. The saddle is Samstag rigged. First originated by a German immigrant Joseph Alexander Samstag (also spelled Samstagg) during the San Francisco California Gold Rush early 1850’s. It was at Main and Winchester were he first developed the exposed or naked rigging design, which was an improvised variant on traditional Spanish rigging. Later Samstag opened his own shop in Visalia, California and then bought in the late 1860’s by D.E. Walker who would become the famous Visalia Stock Saddle Company, Stagg died in 1913. This saddle was made in the 1880’s, pre-Montana Statehood by a Montana Saddle Maker. This is from a prominent Western and Native American Collection in the Pacific Northwest. The saddle has a 14” half seat.
