CONNECTICUT ARMS & MANUFACTURING Co. DERRINGER

PISTOL. Cal. 44 RF. S# 704. Bbl. 4" octagon tapering to 7 sides at muzzle; German silver sight blade. Mfg. late 1865 or early 1866 to company failure in 1868; enough on hand to be sold as new old stock up until early 1880's. Henry Hammond invented the rotating breech and tried to secure military contracts after he formed the company with his brother Lewis; with no success in this vein, they made derringers that are referred to today as "Hammond Bull Dogs". The RF cartridge was similar to 44 Henry, but shorter. Original finish was case colored frames and blued barrels. Grips were checkered (mostly gutta percha or walnut). Total production was approx. 7,400 units; clearly less than 8,000. Presently with smooth walnut grips having brass bushings and screw of about double diameter of normal production. CONDITION: fair brown patina finish throughout. Missing hammer spring. Grips are likely replacements in good condition with handling marks. Proper functioning as is with loose breech. Poor pitted bore with only traces of rifling. (01-22324/NW). ANTIQUE. $200-400.
