CONFEDERATE IMPORT PATTERN 1856/58 ENFIELD RIFLE
SABER BAYONET BY CHAVASSE. Overall length: 28 1/4". Blade length: 22 7/8”. This type and style of bayonet saw extensive use by Confederate forces during the Civil War. This example has no British proofs and is marked “CHAVASSE” who was a known supplier to the Confederacy. It is interesting to note that Chavasse of Aston, Newton, Birmingham went out of business in 1868 due to his support of the Confederacy and the unpaid debts of his Confederate customers. The blade on this bayonet has a single wide & deep fuller. The blade is marked near the hilt “CHAVASSE” in an arc. Iron crossguard stamped “H & F” on the quillon. Iron bird head effigy pommel with 2-piece crosshatched pressed leather grips. Iron mounted leather scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray, mottled patina. Hilt has a similar patina, and grips show light wear only. Scabbard has a similar pleasing patina, and the leather remains quite strong. PROVENANCE: from the lifelong collection of Robert "Mike" Bricker. (02-22351-2/BF). $600-900.
