COMPOSITE SWORD.
Overall length: 32 1/2". Blade length: 27 1/4". This sword has been assembled from a non regulation import hilt of the 1850’s or 60’s and a circa 1820 mounted officer’s sword blade. Blade has a single wide fuller and is etched over half its length with various military, foliate & patriotic motifs, including a panel displaying 20 stars. The spine of the blade is stamped “I S & CO”, which is the mark of John Sayre, a New York importer, silversmith & jeweler. The unrelated hilt is gilded brass with a single branch guard in the style of a non regulation foot officer’s sword. The lightly embellished knuckle bow joins the foliate decorated pommel. Wire wrapped leather grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina and has been coarsely sharpened. Hilt is loose and the quillon is broken away. Grip is substantially intact, but only 3 strands of wire remain. (02-19126/BF). $200-400.
