CIVIL WAR TRUNKS, CRUTCHES, CANES & A CAMP CHAIR.

1) CIVIL WAR OFFICER’S TRUNK. This leather valise measures approx. 23 1/2" x 13 1/2" x 9 1/2". It has 2 carrying handles at the top & a lock. 1 Side has foliate embossing w/ a central rectangular panel embossed, “SOLE LEATHER VALISE WITH STEEL SPRINGS”. 1 End is carefully lettered in 1" high letters, “Capt. A.W. Hostetter, 34th Ill. Vet. Vols.”. The interior is separated by a panel & has tie down straps. CONDITION: the exterior shows moderate wear but the lettering is quite clear. The interior is a bit rough & dirty showing numerous tears & stains. (02-14285/BF).
2) LARGE PERSONAL EFFECTS SHIPPING BOX. This lg. wooden box measures approx. 37 1/2" x 23" x 24". It has iron butt hinges on the back & a forged iron lock & hasp on the front. The interior has a till. The outside is stenciled & lettered on the front, “COMMISSARY. 56TH N.Y. Vols” & each side is lettered, “56 NY Vols”. The interior lid marked, “W.H.D. Blake 56 Rgt NYV.V.”. The interior base marked, “W.H.D. Blake Lieut.
56 N.Y.V.V”. There are other markings on the box that existed during the boxes life as a shipping crate before it was repurposed as a personal effects trunk. CONDITION: trunk shows moderate wear throughout. (02-14299/BF).
3) CRUTCHES & A BOOT JACK. This group contains 12 Civil War & Indian War period crutches of various designs & styles but all made of wood. There is also a handmade wooden boot jack as often used by men during the Civil War to aid in removing their boots. CONDITION: most crutches show moderate to heavy wear. (02-14311(12)/BF).
4) CAMP CHAIR. A Civil War era folding wood camp chair w/ a carpet seat. Wood is painted Spanish brown. Carpet has a geometric design edged w/ cotton tape. CONDITION: chair generally shows light wear w/ some fraying to the edges of the seat. (02-14399/BF).
5) 5 CANES & SHILLELAGHS. This group consists of a 36" cane w/ iron tip & root handle. / 1 35 1/2" walking stick. / 1 38 1/2" shillelagh. / 1 35" shillelagh. / 1 34 1/2" Civil War soldier’s cane featuring 4 snakes wrapped around the shaft of the cane & a rectangular areas near the handle carved “JOS KNIGHT MAY THE 2 62 CAMP. CHASE OHIO”. CONDITION: canes & shillelaghs generally show light to moderate wear. The Civil War cane shows moderate wear w/ some splintered losses near the tip. (02-14420(5)/BF). $500-700.
