CIRCA 1821-1835 INFANTRY OFFICER’S SWORD.
This foot officer’s sword measures 37 1/4" overall with a blade length of 31 3/8”. The blade has a single medium fuller and is etched over 15” of the blade with various foliate & patriotic motifs, including a spray of arms & American eagle. Gilded brass hilt with a classical style guard featuring a central American eagle and a highly embellished knuckle bow. Small eagle pommel with grape leaf decorated ferrule & wire-wrapped grip. Gilded brass scabbard with foliate embellishments. Scabbard is engraved between the mounts “Capt. William J. Clark March 5 1847”. This sword is absolutely original; however, we do not guarantee the engraved personalization to be period. CONDITION: blade has a medium to dark patina with relatively clear etching. Hilt retains only traces of original gilding, but the wire wrap is complete. Scabbard has several shallow dents throughout. (02-20026/BF). $500-800.
