CIRCA 1820-1845 NAVAL OR INFANTRY FOOT OFFICER’S
SWORD. Overall length: 38 1/4". Blade length: 32 1/4". This is an interesting sword because it has a naval motif on the guard but has obvious silver plating, which was not generally utilized by the Navy. Silver plating was, however, commonplace for Infantry foot officer’s swords. Blade has a single wide fuller with gold highlighted etching on a blued field over the first 1/4 of the blade. The spine of the blade has French markings, which appear to read “Manufre de. Klingenthal. Culauf Irprei”. Silvered brass hilt with a downturned kidney shaped guard featuring a wonderful rendition of an American eagle perched on the flukes of an anchor with 17 stars above. Downturned lion head quillon with a lightly embellished cross guard. Knuckle bow has foliate motifs with a central oval showing a liberty cap with rays. Eagle head pommel and 2 piece intricately carved bone grips. Heavily embellished silvered brass scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a general medium gray mottled patina with oxidation over the blued field & gold highlighted etching. The hilt has significant silver plating remaining, particularly in protected areas. Hilt is generally a bit loose, as are the grip panels. Scabbard has one significant dent about 8" from the tip and other smaller shallow dents. Scabbard has only traces of silver plating remaining. (02-19226/BF). $600-900.
