C. 1911 Lakota Sioux Sun Dance Ledger Drawings (2)
The lot features a double-sided original set of ledger drawings from the Northern Sioux of the rare Sun Dance dating to circa 1911-1940’s from the Robert Dickens Little Blue Hand collection. These ledger drawings are from the same ledger book collection offered and sold from our company back in 2013. The original ledger book would have been traded to the Northern Sioux and was said to be handed down from their ancestors at the Sioux Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and later traded to the collector many years ago back in the 1970-1980’s. The set ranging in age from circa 1890 on and is mostly believed to be drawn in circa 1920-1930’s. The ledger art shows an unmarked ledger accounting sheet, likely from Sam Lievine and shows the iconic Lakota Sun Dance. The first image shows the large lodge with the pole at the center having the main dancer attached to the pole with two hooks at his breast as he leans back, his elders and chief sit around him. There are painted buffalo skulls, a raven or eagle, beaded wearing blankets, full feathered headdresses, painted parfleche and more. The other side also shows the Sun Dance with a tipi lodge wonderfully painted having four warriors faces just peeking past watching the dancer in full regalia with a painted hide, war shirt, coup staff and more walking towards the Sun Dance pole with ropes and hooks attached. There are Ghost Dance imagery of four-point Morning Stars, Half Moons and the earth or sun. Truly a rare piece. The condition of this framed ledger art is good with very slight wear to the frame and some wear to the edges of the artwork but otherwise shows good well preserved condition. The measurements of this framed ledger art is 15” by 12.25" and the visible artwork measures 13 5/8”” by 8.5”.
