C. 1910 Jesus M. Tapia Spurs & Tapia Concho Straps
This is an original set of Jesus M. Tapia (1856-1931) circa 1910 silver mounted spurs with Jesus M. Tapia tooled three-piece leather straps with domed engraved and filigree silver conchos, the spurs and strap concho feature the trademark Tapia raised concho with nipples. J. Tapia is considered the Holy Grail of California spur makers with this being an amazing set from a renowned Pacific Northwestern collection. Jesus M. Tapia (1856 - 1931) spurs and bits are the most coveted and valued of the early California makers and was renowned for the elegance and grace of his pieces which frequently included very stylized iron work, tendrils and the elegant and artistry of filigree. Tapia’s work was seldom marked but his style and quality were so distinctive that a knowledgeable California spur and bit collector will have little trouble identifying the few pieces that come to the market. The set shows many telltale Tapia characteristics including the nesting bird design at the base of each heel-band, raised concho with nipples, 14-point spoked rowels. The drop shank spur shows the silver mounting with amazing hand engraving, vaquero style double heel-chains and having two raised concho spots on the shank both with the trademark Tapia nipples, one of the most unique and identifiable attributes of authentic Jesus M. Tapia spurs. The three-piece carved and tooled leather heel straps each have a classic Tapia large silver concho which is domed having a scalloped edge and fine engraving with a the rare Tapia filigree cutout work as well as the trademark Tapia nipple atop the concho. Tapia spurs are truly the most collected California maker with examples selling over $100,000 at auction. One of very few known Tapia’s with the filigree the raised nipple concho on the spur and raised nipple concho on the spur strap. Each spur is about 10.5"L with heel strap by 5"W with leather heel strap as well. Rowels are each about 2 1/16 inches in diameter. Heel strap is about 12"L along the outside and the concho is 2 1/8" in diameter.
