C. 1900-1920 Rare Kenton Cast Iron Two Horse Wagon
Offered in this lot is a Rare Kenton Cast Iron Two Horse Delivery Wagon With Rider, circa 1900-1920s. The Kenton Hardware Company was promoted as "the largest factory in the USA exclusively making cast iron toys" at the turn of the twentieth century. One of Hardin County, Ohio's largest employers, the factory produced a variety of toys that were miniature versions of fire engines, circus wagons, carriages, banks, trains, and stoves. Toy production began in 1894 because of patent disputes with a line of horse-drawn fire equipment, banks, and toy stoves and the name was changed to the Kenton Hardware Manufacturing Co. Very early Kenton toys were not marked; only about ten percent of everything they made was marked. Those toys that were marked are plainly imprinted with the company name on the underside of the toy. In 1927 most of the company's toy production was horsedrawn toys, but this was phased out to be replaced by automotive toys. This toy has a seated driver with a team of two draft horses pulling a delivery wagon. The wagon is green, the spoked wheels and yoke assembly are red with one white horse and one black horse. Rider is painted blue and wearing a cap. Both horses are missing front wheel/tires from their right legs. Mold #2 stamped under yoke. Original paint has flaked off in places though most is intact. No other obvious damages noted. Measures 4.25"W x 14.5"L x 5"H
