C. 1890-1900 Plateau Beaded Headstall Ornament
The lot features a wonderful late 19th to early 20th century beaded hide headstall bridle ornament from the Plateau region Native American Indians. The piece shows a classic design of a headstall ornament or brow band / browband showing a round rosette medallion with tail end all in early original glass trade seed beads in colors of sky padre light blue, semi-transparent dark green, greasy green, and blue. At the center of the medallion is a solid brass trade button. At the base shows hand stamped copper chain link holding an old cast horse bit toy. The piece was likely an early Plateau Indian beaded headstall bridle piece and later having the toy added. A unique piece. Likely from the Nez Perce. Several documented examples in a similar form were attributed to the Crow Apsaalooke of Montana as well. The piece shows trade thread sewing and has little bead loss with slightly supple hide. Measures overall 9.5" by 3 3/8". Provenance: From a private Native American collection in Wisconsin.
