C. 1880 Nez Perce Beaded Sheath & Trade Knife
The lot features a terrific, authentic circa 1880 beaded harness leather knife sheath and pewter inlaid trade knife from the Nez Perce Native Indians of Idaho. The piece is comprised of dyed harness saddle leather, being sinew sewn and has a strip of old blue stroud clothe. The sheath shows classic 19th Century glass trade seed bead beadwork showing a chalk white fancy outer edge and beautifully beaded triangular-shaped pattern in chalk white, greasy Cheyenne pink, greasy green, greasy sky padre light blue, cobalt and greasy amber, all traditional pastel colors known to have been used by the Intermontane Plateaus Indians of the 19th Century. There are four old tarnished trade tacks on the front and a strip of old hide lacing tied on. An original leather tie strap is attached. The 19th Century old trade knife exhibits a solid wood grip having a geometric pewter inlaid design and overall knife patina. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Dale Harrison of Cincinnati, OH. Sheath measures 9 ½ inches long. Knife measures 11 inches long.
