C. 1870 Sioux Quilled & Beaded Tipi Bag Fort Yates
The lot features an exceptional quilled and beaded buffalo hide tipi possibles bag from the Sioux dating to circa 1870-1880’s collected from Fort Yates in North Dakota. The bag is comprised of Indian brain tanned buffalo / bison hide that is sinew sewn and adorned along the front with a classic Indian Wars period porcupine quilled banded design having natural pigment dyed red, lilac purple and natural. The bag also is sinew sewn with classic beadwork along the sides using all period correct 1800’s glass trade seed cen beads. The beadwork shows the classic tab geometric design and is in colors of greasy yellow, red white heart, cobalt blue, chalk white and greasy sky padre light blue. There are also many rolled tin jingle dangle cone fringes on Indian tanned hide with several having red dyed horse tail hair accents. The bag has original ties and fringes and has been well preserved. Some very slight loss to the quillwork and little loss to the beads. The piece was collected from Fort Yates in the Dakota Territories and is truly a historic and authentic example. The bag has been professionally framed for museum preservation and display, encased in a plexiglass box on a rustic frame. The bag was also in the same collection for over 40 years. The frame measures 27.5” by 19.5” by 6” and the bag itself is approximately 20.5” W by 15” H.
