C. 1870 Plains Stone Head War Club - L.A. Huffman
The lot features a phenomenal circa 1870’s Northern Plains beaded stone head war club collected by L.A. Huffman. Likely from the Northern Cheyenne or Sioux of Montana. The piece exhibits a carved bi-point stone head war club secured to the parfleche rawhide wrapped wood haft handle with a wrap of parfleche rawhide with a thick Buffalo / Bison hide hand covered in sinew sewn bands of 19th Century period correct glass trade seed beads. Beneath the head is some thin Indian hide fringes with more beadwork bands with another similar section at the center and some Indian tanned buckskin fringes at the gripping area. The parfleche has a dark red ocher mineral pigment coloring. The head has a museum collection number painted on, “3869”. The piece was collected in Montana by Laton Alton Huffman (1854-1931). L.A. Huffman was a noted photographer in Montana. His collection was acquired by noted Montana collector John Fox. This piece is from the John Fox, Missoula, Montana collection. There is some slight bead loss which shows the sinew strands, an early beadwork and weapons feature of the Indian Wars era. The club measures 24.5”L with the head being about 3.5” by 3” by 2.75”.
