C. 1870- Lakota Sioux Warrior Photo by R.L. Kelly
This is an original silver albumen cabinet card of a Lakota Sioux Warrior, possibly Chief Eagle Shirt from circa 1870-1880’s by photographer R.L. Kelly. The photograph is by Robert L. Kelly (1851-1934) of Pierre, South Dakota Territory, he is said to photograph as early as circa 1860-1870’s from Pierre, South Dakota Territory and later worked with partner, M.B. Odell of Deadwood. Known for taking the iconic photograph of Sitting Bull with a Monarch Butterfly pinned to his hat in 1883 as well as images of Calamity Jane, Sitting Bull, Alice and Ilma Kelly, Indian scenes and more. This image shows the Lakota Sioux Brave, which could possibly be Chief Eagle Shirt. The Native American man has a feather war bonnet with trailer having a bone hair pipe breast plate as well as concho belt, dance bell leg cuffs and beaded moccasins. He is holding what appears to be a pipe. The image is marked on the front, “RL Kelly Pierre, S.D.” The image has amazing detail and the card is well kept with some slight discoloration on the edge. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. Measures 6.5” by 4.25”. U6
