This lot includes an original Burt Glenn, Time Life Magazine photograph taken in October 1952. The photo is from the November 10th, 1952 series, but remained un-used in the project. The series came about when a Texas oil magnate purchased the Great Falls, Montana Mint Bar & Grills personal Charles M. Russell collection for upwards of $300,000. The photograph shows a Butte, Montana livestock auction, in which local Montanan's donated cattle to raise funds to purchase back the original Russell works. Fundraising for the cause was a state wide cause - The Time Life article states that "citizens drummed up funds by sponsoring cattle auctions, rodeos, lotteries, Wild West theatricals, and barn dances", it continues to say "Newspapers and radio stations joined in the campaign and Russell canvassers made the rounds of schools and houses, collecting contributions in outsized Western hats". One of the large contributors of the fund was the late John R. Quigley - father of the consigner of the photograph collection, and creator and previous owner of "Frontier Town", an attraction just outside of Helena, Montana. The consigner goes on to say "He (Burt Glinn) and my wild Irish dad had a good time while Glinn was at Frontier Town on assignment", giving reason to be gifted the photographs. The photograph is accompanied by the original November 10th, 1952 issue of Life Magazine, in which an article is written about the efforts. Overall, the photograph shows good condition overall, but has some reasonable creasing at the bottom. The photo is marked on the back with numerous stamps, one claiming capture by Burt Glinn, and one stating ownership by Time Life Magazine, not to be reproduced. The photo is preservation shrink wrapped to acid-free mat board. The photograph masures 13" x 10 5/8".
