Featured for sale in this lot is an original Burt Glinn 1952 Time Life Magazine photograph, from the Charles M. Russell fundraising campaign series. The photograph shows an elderly man sitting underneath the iconic "Herd Quitters" original painting. The Burt Glinn Time Life series came about when a Texas oil magnate purchased the Great Falls, Montana, Mint Bar Charles Russell collection for $300,000. Local Montanan's realized they had taken for granted the fact that they held the only collection which could rival that of renowned Frederic Remington. They made a state wide effort to fundraise money to reclaim the original works. The November 10th, 1952 issue of Time Life Magazine states "citizens drummed up funds by sponsoring cattle auctions, rodeos, lotteries, Wild West theatricals, and barn dances", it continues to say "Newspapers and radio stations joined in the campaign and Russell canvassers made the rounds of schools and houses, collecting contributions in outsized Western hats". The photo was acquired directly from Burt Glinn by the late John R. Quigley - Creator and owner of Frontier Town, just outside Helena, Montana. Quigley was the father to the consigner, who says "he (Glinn) and my wild Irish dad had a good time while Glinn was at Frontier Town on assignment". The photograph shows good condition overall, however showing a crease across the bottom of the image. The image is preservation shrink wrapped to acid-free mat board. The photograph itself measures 9 3/8" x 6 3/8".
