Buffalo Hunt , Framed Etching Bill O'Neill
Offered in this lot is an etching of "Buffalo Hunt" by Montana artist, Bill O'Neill . O'Neill was a Montana artist born in Livingston, Montana and is known for his black and white depictions of western wild life and figures. This etching depicts a Native American warrior, spear in hand and mounted on a horse in the process of hunting bison. The nearest bison to him has the look of impending harm as it attemps to gallop away, an adjacent galloping bison seemingly unaware of the danger closing in. An unaffected bison in the background is a spectator in the scene of life and death playing out in the foreground. The vegetation in the foreground is reminiscent of the Montana prairies of the late 1800's, and can still be found throughout the state. Engineering and architectural training prepared Bill for various types of intricate art, such as geological and geographical aerial mapping. However, combining whatever advertising and commercial illustration skills he had developed, to produce sketches that public enjoyed was his greatest joy! Unknown when the etching was made but the original created by O'Neill circa 1970s took over one year to complete. The style is known as Pointillism, a painting or drawing technique that involves placing small dots of colour in close proximity to each other on a canvas to create a larger image.
This etching has been professionally mounted in a rustic barnyard distressed solid wood, glass enclosed frame, the title is affixed to the front with a brass coloured placard. The inside trim is hand painted grey. The piece is in overall good condition, no marring noted. Visible art measures 18.25"W x 22.75"L, frame 24.75"W x 29.5"L
