Buffalo Bill Carving Set
Fine English ivory and silver handle carving set with 10” blade marked with the manufacturer’s name of HARRISON BROS. & HAWSON and agent-marked T STEEL & SON / HARTFORD. Accompanied by a meat fork with articulated arm and identical handle to the knife. Both pieces have tapered ivory handles with silver ferrule and a heavy cast silver pommel with ram’s head on each side and a garland around the top. Both handles are scrimshawed W F C. The silver cap is marked W R COE. Coe was a New Yorker and long-time personal friend of Buffalo Bill and purchased a large ranch from Col Cody in the South Fork Valley of the Shoshone River, outside of Cody, WY, near Buffalo Bill’s home ranch. The carving set is contained in a leather-bound wood case with gold washed hinges and latch. The lid is embossed in Old English script TD/S/1878. These are apparently the initials of the agent T Steel. A small old paper tag on the bottom has pen and ink writing that says Car/TE. The TE Ranch is the Buffalo Bill Ranch that is still in operation. Overall very good condition. The steel parts of the knife and fork retain a grayish metal color with scattered discoloration. The handles have longitudinal crack and age lines
