Classic “SOUTHERNER DERRINGER” manufactured between 1869-1873 by the Brown Manufacturing Co. Newburyport, Mass. This scarce iron frame .41 caliber hideout pistol was made with both brass frames and iron frames. In all approx. 10,000 were manufactured and of these only about 30% were made with iron frames. The left side of the barrel is clearly stamped with the correct Brown Manufacturing Company markings along with the patent date of 1869. This example with matching barrel, frame and extractor serial number 2446 is also correctly stamped “SOUTHERNER” on the top of the 2 ½” octagon barrel. This distinctive and iconic derringer pistol measures only 5 inches overall and displays lovely original rosewood grips. To load, the hammer is brought back to half-cock, the barrel release button on the bottom of the frame is pressed and the barrel will then pivot exposing the breech for loading a single cartridge. This action also forces the extractor to slide rearward pushing out a spent cartridge case. Once loaded, the barrel is swung back into battery, the hammer pulled to full-cock and the trigger pulled to fire the weapon. The barrel shows a lovely blue and the frame shows deep, mottled case colors with some silver mixing. The arm also displays very tight lock-up, strong hammer springs and crisp cocking notches. An iconic personal defense weapon of the early post Civil War years, the Southerner found favor with well-heeled gentlemen, gamblers, ladies of society and ladies of the evening, lawmen and outlaws alike! This is a most attractive example and a rare variation with the desirable iron frame. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Matt
