Bob Hope Clown Pants from The Seven Little Foys
These clown pants was worn by the character "Eddie Foy Sr.," portrayed by comedy legend Bob Hope, in the 1955 Edith Head-designed film, “The Seven Little Foys.” The cream wool pants with multi-colored satin polka-dots comes complete with the original Paramount label sewn inside with “Double Bob Hope” handwritten in faded blue ink. (due to there being complex action and fire during the sequence, Hope would have had multiple pants for filming). The pants were worn during a theatre fire as Foy (Hope) rescues his son, who is trapped on a catwalk. He then braves the flames to run onstage and start performing to try to calm the crowd, and is subsequently pronounced a hero by the papers. This theatre fire is the only known theatrical portrayal of the infamous 1903 Iroquois Theatre fire in Chicago that killed six hundred people. It was the worst theatre fire in American history. Eddie Foy Sr., who was playing in “Mr. Bluebeard” that day, helped rescue many of the audience by his actions. “The Seven Little Foys,” starring Bob Hope and James Cagney, is a biographic film of the famous entertainer’s life and his inclusion of his seven children into his vaudeville act after his wife’s death. It was nominated for an Academy Award in 1956. The garment is in very good screen worn condition and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the costume house.
