Blackfoot Tipi Polychrome Painted Model
The lot features a Blackfoot model tipi with painted images on muslin and parfleche remnant door from the ex-James Flury collection. The piece was noted as an, “Early Model Tipi to Document Designs” in Blackfoot style of the early 1900’s as noted by Bruce Johnson. The piece exhibits a muslin tipi cover over stripped willow branch tipi poles tied together with Indian tanned hide ties on a hoop of willow ties with cotton thread at the bottom. The front shows a remnant of old parfleche rawhide as the door, likely from an old envelope with original polychrome painted finish tied with Indian tanned hide. The tipi is covered in traditional style polychrome painted figures such as a coiling snake in green and yellow outlined in black, a five-point star with full sun / moon as well as several five-point stars and crescent or half-moon on the back, all of which are Ghost Dance imagery. At the bottom is a red band with round circles. The top has trimmings in yellow. Provenance: Form the ex-James Flury collection and reviewed by Bruce Johnson. James Flury is a prominent dealer of Indian art, a member of ATADA. Blackfoot / Blackfeet and tipi / tepee / teepee. The piece measures 20.5”H by 12” in diameter.
