This is a Blackfeet American Indian beaded skullcracker war club with beadwork dating to the 19th Century. The Blackfeet (Blackfoot) war club shows an expertly carved stone head war club which shows a unique design with four cut grooves having a red and blue painted finish within them. The stone head is secured to a wood haft which is covered in an old muslin trade canvas which is accented by green wool trade fabric with long cut fringe. Also shown on the handle is four sections of nicely patina’d hair on fur along with linear beaded large sections of wonderful period correct 19th Century petit seed beads in greasy yellow, medium green and semi-transparent medium green. At the base is tied with Indian tanned hide with a drop of ocher red pigment dyed horsehair. This is truly a wonderful circa 1880 example in good overall condition. Provenance: From the private family collection of Sarah Alling of Helena, Montana. The family collection of Sarah Alling, a 5th Generation Montanan, began in the 19th Century and has grown since. Along with being an avid collector herself, Sarah co-founded with Bruce VanLandingham Sundog Fine Art of Bozeman, Montana which was both part museum and gallery. Overall measures 21.75”L with an additional 8.5”L drop fringe. The head measures 4.5”W x 2.5”W.
