Black Powder Colt London Agency Single Action Etched Panel Frontier Six Shooter Revolver with Brit
This Colt Single Action "Frontier Six Shooter" revolver was manufactured in 1886. The revolver is complete with a copy of a Colt factory letter that describes it as a Colt Single Action Army Revolver, caliber .44/40 with 7 1/2-ich barrel and blue finish. The letter states that it was shipped to Colt's London Agency on April 22, 1886. The revolver has a commercial blue barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and backstrap. The frame and hammer have a casehardened finish. The one-piece walnut stock has a varnish finish. The left side of the barrel is acid etched: "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" in an oval panel. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the one-line legend: "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.". The underside of the barrel is stamped with the caliber designation "44". The left side of the frame has the Colt 'three-line/three-date' patent markings. The left front trigger guard bow is stamped: "44.C.F." The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "1371". British "Crown/V" and "Crown/GP" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the underside of the barrel and above each chamber on the cylinder. The full serial number, "103585" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and backstrap. The partial serial number, "3585" is stamped on the cylinder ad on the underside of the barrel. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver has a British style oak case with red felt lining, five compartments and a 27-round cartridge block. The top of the case is reinforced with brass screws and has a round brass inlay in the center. The case contains: (1) screw-driver with ebony handle, (2) pewter oil bottle stamped with a "G&J.W./HAWKSLEY" cartouche on the bottom, (3) cleaning rod with ebony handle and brass jag and (4) 27 modern British .450 Boxer cartridges. The case was apparently intended for a .45 caliber Colt revolver and is not original to this .44 caliber Single Action. The cleaning rod is too short for a 7 1/2-inch barrel and is not original to the case.
BBL: 7 1/2 In
Stock:
Gauge: 44-40
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 103585
Condition: Very fine. The revolver retains 60% of the original blue and 40% casehardened finish. There are strong traces of blue finish on protected areas of the barrel, in the cylinder flutes and on the trigger guard and backstrap. The frame and hammer have strong case colors in protected areas. There is scattered light pitting on the cylinder, top of the frame and left recoil shield. The balance of the revolver has an attractive blue-gray patina. The delicate, acid-etched, "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" marking remains sharp. The factory markings and British proof marks on the barrel frame and cylinder are crisp. The grip is in excellent condition with about 80% of the original varnish and only scattered light handling marks. The action is crisp. The case is in good overall condition with moderate handling wear on the exterior. The interior is in fine condition; the red felt lining is dusty but shows limited wear. This is a good example of a British proofed, Colt London Agency, Frontier Six Shooter Single Action revolver with British case.
