This is a representative example of a Civil War contract Ball Carbine. The left side of the receiver is marked: "E.G. LAMSON & CO./ WINDSOR. VT./U.S./BALLS PATENT./JUNE.23.1863/MAR. 15, 1864." Fixed front and two leaf folding rear sights and has a cleaning rod on the right side of the forearm and sling ring and bar on the left side of the receiver. The oil finished walnut forearm and straight grip stock have a steel crescent buttplate and a clear "GGL" cartouche directly behind the sling bar with a "P" above it. There is a small "S" stamped on most of the components and a very small "CCS" or "GGS" stamped on the bottom of the forearm and top of the stock just ahead of the tang.

Condition: Good. The metal has a brown patina overall with some scattered minor pitting and spotting. The buttstock is very good with a clear cartouche and scattered dings overall. A hairline crack is present on the underside of the forearm extending from the receiver. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine.
