SOLID PEWTER, WOOD BASE, HIGH QUALITY AMERICAN CRAFTSMANSHIP

Francis J. Barnum’s Brothers Against Brothers is a Civil War–themed limited-edition pewter sculpture made for the Chilmark Fine Pewter line, and it focuses on one of the most powerful ideas of the American Civil War: families and fellow Americans fighting on opposite sides.

What the piece represents

The sculpture is symbolic rather than depicting one exact historical moment. It reflects:

the division between Union and Confederate soldiers
often the idea of former friends, relatives, or even brothers fighting each other
the emotional tragedy of the Civil War splitting communities and families

The title “Brothers Against Brothers” comes from the fact that the Civil War is often described as a conflict where Americans literally fought Americans, sometimes within the same family.

HISTORY:
Francis J. Barnum’s Brothers Against Brothers is a symbolic Civil War–themed sculpture, not a depiction of one specific documented battle or event.

Historical idea behind it

The title comes from a common description of the American Civil War (1861–1865): a conflict where Americans fought other Americans, sometimes even within the same family.

The sculpture reflects:

Union and Confederate soldiers divided by loyalty
families and communities split by the war
the emotional reality of “civil war” literally meaning internal conflict
Civil War context

During the war:

states were divided between North (Union) and South (Confederacy)
many families had members serving on opposite sides
soldiers often faced opponents who shared similar backgrounds or even kinship

This is what the phrase “brothers against brothers” represents historically.
