Berdan Sharpshooters:

Elite Union regiments during the Civil War, famous for marksmanship.
Wore distinctive green uniforms instead of standard blue.
Carried rifles like the Sharps rifle, often used as snipers or skirmishers.
Raised by Colonel Hiram Berdan.

Pewter Barum / Pewter Button:

During the Civil War, many soldiers’ uniforms had buttons made of pewter, a common inexpensive metal.
“Barum” might be a manufacturer’s name stamped on the button, or a misreading of “Beman” or another pewter maker’s mark.
Collectors of Civil War memorabilia often refer to “Berdan Sharpshooter pewter buttons”, which were small, round, and sometimes stamped with eagle or other insignia.
