Authentic Confederate flag with provenance to Chicago Historical Society and the Charles Gunther Collection which was purchased by the Museum in 1910. A letter of provenance by Arnold Marcus Chernoff documents the provenance of this flag and he states that this flag was obtained by him from the Chicago Historical Society in a well-known trade. Gunther is said to have had the finest collection of Civil War memorabilia ever assembled. At the end of the Civil War capturedConfederate goods were placed in the famous Libby Prison and held there as a storehouse. In the 1880s Gunther purchased the entire Libby prison and its contents making him this owner of the largest collection of Confederate memorabilia atthat time. His collection contained some of the most historic and finest artifacts extant at the time and he opened a Museum in 1899. In 1910 upon his death the Chicago Historical Society purchased the entire Gunther collection. This flag wasobtained by Mr. William Gary from Arnold Marcus Chernoff in 1979 and a letter to this effect signed by Chernoff and dated July 7, 1979 is included.
