Austrian Lorenz percussion musket with bayonet and sheath accompanied by a copy of a Sept./Oct. 2007 Confederate Veteran magazine article by Jon B. Whittington that covers the history of this gun and Private Henry Long. The rifle is in .58caliber, 37.5” barrel, S/N 853, in overall good condition with a crisp action, dark patina to metal surfaces, replaced percussion nipple and overall good wood stock displaying old repairs and lettering marked into the left side of the buttstock “5VIR HL”. A woven sling is included and the bayonet and leather sheath are in overall good condition. Mr. Whittington’s article in summary, relates his belief that the old lettering stands for the 5th Virginia Infantry Regiment, a unitthat was part of the famous “Stonewall Brigade” and a large part of his “foot cavalry” in the 2nd Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. After further research, the author further notes that there was only one name in the entire regimentthat matched the “H.L.” initials, that being Henry Long, a private in Co. A. Further research by Mr. Whittington revealed that Henry Long was born in 1814, and in 1850, was listed as a resident in Shenandoah County, Virginia and was a miller by
