This is a fantastic example of a factory engraved First Series Colt Woodsman pistol manufactured in 1936. The rear sides of the barrel are nicely floral scroll engraved with a punch dot background surrounding the two line address/1903 and 1918 patent dates. There is a small wedge of engraving flanking the front sight. The frame slide, trigger guard and grip straps are engraved with the same floral scroll and punch dot design, there is a simple line border around the rear sight and there is a dot, wavy line, dot and scallop design on the upper left side of the frame. The left side of the frame is marked "THE WOODSMAN" and the left side of the slide is inscriber "JAS. R. KEARNEY" over "COLT AUTOMATIC/.22 LONG RIFLE". The Rampant Colt behind the serrations has been replaced by the engraving design. The serial number appears on the front strap. Elevation adjustable front blade and windage adjustable rear sights, serrated trigger, two tone colt marked magazine and fitted with smooth pearl grips. The accompanying factory letter verifies the serial number, caliber, barrel length, grips as "Not Listed", "B" factory engraving and that it was shipped as 1 to Load Accounting, H.W. Kline, Kansas city, Missouri on September 15, 1936. There is a note on the letter which states "Records also indicate arm later delivered to R.S. Elliott Arms Co., Kansas City, Missouri, on October 7, 1936. Writer found numerous James R. Kearneys on an internet search. Some research may prove interesting. The pistol is complete with the original hinged lid maroon box numbered to the gun with lid end label reading "TARGET/PATRIDGE SIGHTS" and body end label reading "COLT AUTOMATIC PISTOL/WOODSMAN MODEL .22/LONG RIFLE". The inside of the lid has the correct "COLT AUTOMATIC PISTOL" marking in English and Spanish and the body has the "COLT REVOLVERS" marking. In the box is an original cleaning brush, sight screwdriver, test target, "Special Instructions" and "Shooting Suggestions" pamphlets and manual. This particular pistol is pictured in the C.C.A. book and was 1 of 3 Woodsmans pictured on the cover of the 2006 Standard Catalog of Firearms by Ned Schwing.
