Manufactured circa 1876-1877. Pinned blade front and notch rear sights, with the two line patent and address markings on the rib, reading from breech to muzzle, with flanking Maltese crosses, and matching numbers on the latch, barrel, cylinder and butt. The "crown/V" and "crown/GP" London Armory stamps are present on the left side of the barrel and in alternating cylinder flutes. With a casehardened hammer and checkered plastic grips with "S&W." imprints at the top. With a green fabric covered box, bearing the instruction sheet on the inside of the lid, and the "picture label" on top, featuring a Baby Russian in the center, a blue ink "NICKEL/PLATED." stamp, and the text "SMITH & WESSON/No.38/Automatic Ejector,/SPRINGFIELD, MASS.". Note: The barrel address is stamped upside-down, reading left to right. It must have been stamped late on a Friday or early on a Monday, either way this employee was distracted.

Condition: Excellent, with 90% of the original nickel, with some light flaking and handling marks overall. A mixed gray and brown patina is present on the visible steel. All markings, including the London proofs, are sharply defined. Grips are excellent, with a few dents and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The box is very good, with some light staining, wear along the edges, and a small amount of material loss on the label, which is still sharply and clearly marked.
