Armour Bronze Corp. Bronze Elephant Ashtray 1923
Featured in this lot is this bronze elephant cigar ashtray made by Armour Bronze in New York circa 1923. Armor Bronze, formerly The National Metalizing Company, began in 1910 in New York and New Jersey. Changing the name to Armor bronze about 1920, they produced art objects, statuary, and lamps using a polychrome coloring process with its roots in ancient Egyptian and Chinese methods. They sometimes employed hand-etched sgraffito on their pieces. The company changed location in the 1930's to Massachusetts. It stopped producing in the late 1940s. The ashtray shows a bronze elephant standing on a beige colored ball overlooking the tray. Around the rim of the tray are three slots for holding cigars. The bottom features an Armour Bronze sticker, while the back of the sculpture is marked reading, "Armour Bronze Corp. / ©1923". The piece shows good condition overall with some slight wear present and paint chipping on the ball. No signs of obvious damage is present. The ashtray measures 10 1/2" L x 8 5/8" W x 10 1/2" H and weighs 9 pounds and 8 ounces.
