Featured in this lot we have a stipple engraving print by John Edward Carew of his statue titled "Arethusa" originating from the mid 19th century. This print was made as a illustration for the 1848 edition of "The Art Journal" and was published by The Art Union Monthly Journal. The piece depicts a statue in a niche with a nymph standing next to a seated grey hound as she looks off to the left. She is shown with one hand resting on the dogs head with the other hand up and a finger raised as if having heard a sound. The statue is marked across the base "Carew Arethusa" and the bottom of the print is marked "H. Corbould. del - Published Exclusively in the Art Union Monthly journal Dyer. Sculp". The statue as well as other Arethusa prints have been featured in galleries such as the British Museum. This piece is set into a decorative metallic painted frame with embossed leaf like patterns and a green border around the print. The print shows good condition overall with some light wear on the frame and a small stain on the print. The frame measures 16 1/8" wide by 19 1/2" tall with the art measuring 7" wide by 10 1/2" tall.
