Apache Dag Knife w/ Parfleche Rattlesnake Sheath
The lot features a dag fighting knife with parfleche and snakeskin sheath attributed to the Apache Native American Indians. This example shows a sheet iron re-used double edge blade with dark coloring attached at the tang to the old Buffalo bone handle which has been further adorned with a wrapping of parfleche rawhide over a wood gasket and shows three solid brass trade tacks. The bone itself has a brown to yellow older, possibly stained, finish which displays very well. The knife is accompanied by a parfleche rawhide and harness saddle leather dag knife sheath which shows a section of Rattlesnake skin down the center framed by cut fringe hide, a wrapping of harness leather with rolled tin chew can jingle cones and brass trade tacks. At the top of the sheath shows a diamond or triangle shaped dark pigment painted finish and belt strap. The exact age and origin of the piece is unknown, but it is in the manner and style of the Apache Warrior. Together the set measures 15”L with the knife being 11.25”L by 3”W by 2.25”D or thick.
