Antique Sharps New Model 1863 Breechloading Saddle Ring Cavalry Carbine, altered by the Sharps Co. to metallic cartridge c. 1867, #C10766, .52-70 RF cal., blued 22'' round barrel with block-blade front and adjustable sliding-leaf rear sights, is marked ''Sharps Rifle/Manuf'g. Co./Hartford Conn.'' ahead of rear sight, and ''New Model 1863'' behind; case hardened ''Straight Breech'' receiver is marked with R.S. Lawrence's 1859 patent behind hammer and Sharps' 1852 patent below on right side, Sharps' 1848 patent and a steel sling bar and ring on left side, has a spring-loaded firing pin and a serpentine operating lever that drops open the breechblock for loading cartridges; oil-stained walnut forestock has a single spring-retained barrel band; matching buttstock has a ''DFC'' (David F. Clark) ribbon-shaped inspector's cartouche on left side, and case hardened buttplate. Condition is excellent. Barrel retains approx. 98% smooth military-style dull blue; receiver, hammer, lever and triggerplate show faint mottled case colors turning to silver. Stocks are smooth and solid having original ''feathering'' and nice grain and color. Action is smooth; bore is brilliant with sharp rifling. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (Antique)
