You have the unique opportunity to bid on an antique fur sleigh blanket. In the early part of the Twentieth Century, when this blanket was made, they were commonly called, "lap robes". They would have been used in not only sleighs and buggies, but also early automobiles that did not have heaters. There were a number of companies at the time who manufactured fur lap robes. This particular lap robe was almost certainly made by Edes Robe and Tanning Co. in Dubuque, IA in 1915. In February of 1915, St. Clair Ede applied for a patent for his innovative pocketed lap robe design; it was granted the following year in January. This lap robe features that patented design. Furthermore, what can be made out on the tag would suggest Edes in Dubuque. This lap robe is believed to be horse hide, as Edes mostly worked with cattle and horse hides, though they would fill special orders with any hide brought to them. The hide is wool lined with a felt border. The lap robe is in great condition for its age, though there is a 7" split in the seam of the fur at the bottom. It measures 75" x 46.5".
