Antique American Folk Art collector's quality carved wood cane with finely carved block letters stating (erected May 31st 1819 fire Feb 2 1897, from the state Capital Building of PA) and the name "JNO.L.Shoemaker" in theform of a belt with buckle. The grip area of the cane is carved with a decorative alligator. The cane measures 35" in length by 6" across. There is also a carving of the state seal of Pennsylvania by the upper most portion. The cane is nicely stained and very finely carved. It was an American tradition in the 19th century to carve art work in canes from wrecked ships, historical buildings that were torn down and Lincoln'scabin and fences were carved in this manner. Pennsylvania was home to the makers of great Kentucky rifles and had many talented carvers in the 19th century especially around Philadelphia. Est.;$750-$1,500.
