In perfect Kirkpatrick fashion this social statement of the times has a whimsical approach to mark the occasion. A flat disk featuring two dung beatles moving away from .their normal daily duty of rolling dung. Incised is the statement "The Big Strike of 1894/the rolling mill stopped". The bottom of the disk is incised with script handwriting "Anna Pottery". In 1894 the Pullman Palace Car Company went on strike causing a nation wide disruption. The company was founded by George Pullman in 1867. By 1893 it was the foremost railroad car manufacturing companies in the United States employing over 5,500 laborers. In 1893 financial panic hit the U.S. and over 4,000 workers were initially laid off by Pullman and wages were drastically cut. By April 1894, Pullman was able to rehire some men bringing the total number of workers back to 3,300. The wages, remained low and rent from Pullman in his community where their workers lived was unchanged, later that month the workers began to organize into local unions. On May 7, 1894 a committee of Pullman workers presented their grievances to the company, the grievances were dismissed by the company and the committee members were laid off. On May 11th the workers voted to strike and Pullman was forced to close the plant. Over 3,000 workers joined the strike. More than just the Pullman employees join in on the protest, railroad workers refused to handle U.S. mail that arrived by train if a Pullman car was attached. After a bought of riots the workers were ordered by the federal government to return to work on August 2nd with little to show for their efforts. The event set the stage for future labor disputes and the understanding of the power of a united force with a union voice. H 1 3/4", W 3 1/2",
