American percussion single shot dueling/target pistol, signed “S. Sutherland, Richmond VA” on barrel. Approx. 16-1/4” overall, with 10-1/4” heavy barrel. Approx. .36 caliber rifled. Half-stocked with saw-handle type grip, plain German silver mounts. The metal surfaces show a grey to brown patina finish with some scattered light to moderate erosion and pinprick pitting. The lock and furniture is plain other than the hammer which is lightly scroll engraved. The stock is straight-grained wood, checkered at the wrist, and shows a break and repair at the grip, and some light refinishing when repaired. Action good, generally good overall. Old wood ramrod included. A Southern dueler by a well known maker of generous proportions. Note: Pistol shows a hand-made brass rear sight and a silver miniature bead front sight. The smallest bead we have seen on this type pistol; the owner must have had an eagle eye to even see it. Gives rise to the term “Drawing a bead”. From the William R. Orbelo Collection. Est: $1,250 - $2,500
