This is an outstanding set of two American Indian arrow shaft straighteners dating to the 1700’s. The first shows a hand carved stone which has naturally broken from much use and was covered in a Great American Bison Buffalo parfleche rawhide which is sinew sewn. The second and larger of the two is also hand carved and has a nice even patina along with wear from many years of use. These both date to the 18th Century from the American Indians of the Plains, Southern Plains or Plateau peoples. Provenance: From the private family collection of Sarah Alling of Helena, Montana. The family collection of Sarah Alling, a 5th Generation Montanan, began in the 19th Century and has grown since. Along with being an avid collector herself, Sarah co-founded with Bruce VanLandingham Sundog Fine Art of Bozeman, Montana which was both part museum and gallery. The first measures 6”L x 2 1/8”W x 1.5”D. The second measures 5 3/8”L x 1.75”W x 1.5”D.
